The Spring-Summer 2013 issue of the ICNA Newsletter is now available for download/read online. Over the last few years it has been such a pleasure to watch how the ICNA newsletter has blossomed into a vibrant and visual display of ICNA activities.This issue is packed with updates on the numerous educational meetings, the latest on the forthcoming ICNCs (2014 and 2016), early warning of a forthcoming call for nominations to the become part of the ICNA board, and for bids for the 2018 ICNC. Idiopathic focal epilepsy (IFE) with rolandic spikes is the most common childhood epilepsy, comprising a phenotypic spectrum from rolandic epilepsy (also benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes, BECTS) to atypical benign partial epilepsy (ABPE), Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) and epileptic encephalopathy with continuous spike and waves during slow-wave sleep (CSWS)
A recent study published in Nature Genetics analysed genetic material from 400 patients with IFE found heterozygous mutations in GRIN2A gene,the gene encoding the NMDA receptor NR2A subunit in 7.5 per cent of them,. In "rolandic epilepsy," which accounts for 15 per cent of cases of childhood epilepsy and therefore makes it the most common form of the condition, these mutations disrupt the function of the NMDA receptor, one of the brain's key ion channels.Further research will focus on the mechanisms behind how the mutation leads to epilepsy.
The study involved collaboration between two research networks EuroEPINOMICS and IonNeurOnet.

The ICNA offers travel awards to provide financial assistance for travel costs associated with the International Child Neurology Congresses. The award consists of a grant of upto USD 2500 to support their travel costs (to be reimbursed after the congress) and a commemorative certificate. Successful applicants will be expected to submit a written report on the congress within two months of the event.
ICNC Travel Grants and Bursaries are available for young attendees from developing countries who wish to attend the ICNC 2014 .Applicants are required to present a paper or poster in order to be considered for an award.
Application requires:
Copy of abstract(s) submitted to the congress
A brief CV
Statement of level of financial support that is requested, with justifications for the costs of travel. Itinerary for the lowest cost of travel available from your originating city.
Verification of the applicant's status from the applicant's mentor
The grant will cover:
Registration to the ICNC2014
Contribution towards travel costs
Contribution towards hotel accommodation during the conference
Applications should be submitted online. The grant funds will be paid out following the congress. The deadline for applications has now passed.

Please note that inorder to avail of the student/resident discount, you would be required to upload your credentials during the registration process. Please hurry to make sure you sent in your registrations before the early bird discount deadline on November 1, 2013. A limited number of travel fellowships and bursaries are being made available by the ICNA, details of which would be available on this site very shortly.
All payments are to be made in US Dollars except for attendees from Brazil who have the option of paying in Brazilian Reals.

Both CARD Payments and BANK Transfers are accepted. Brazilian registrants will be automatically forwarded to a secure site for making their payment.
