Talk Title: Is it really a seizure?
About Topic:
The case will focus in the semiological aspects and EEG recognition of focal epilepsies originating over the frontal lobe (motor, non-motor, with preserved awareness and nocturnal), their differential diagnosis mainly with psychogenic non epileptic seizures, its most common comorbidities, diagnostic work up available therapies and outcomes.
Learning objectives :
- Identify epileptic vs non epileptic seizures by semiology
- Recognise the variation of seizure semiology related to age and neuro-anatomical origin
- Utility of scalp EEG in structural focal epilepsies in children
Dr.M.Ranjith Kumar
Talk Title: Two faces of hamartoma - Shared Pathology, Contrasting Presentations"
About Topic:
Two different cases of hypothalamic hamartoma (HH). One of which required surgical management (sessile causing gelastic seizures and the other one conservative approach- giant hypothalamic hamartoma. The case highlights challenges in the diagnosis and management of hypothalamic hamartomas.
Learning objectives:
- Not to miss a hypothalamic hamartoma on imaging
- Approach to surgical management of HH
- Challenging postoperative complications following epilepsy surgery in HH
Dr Stephen Malone
Talk Title: Exposing the basics - when the Paediatrician teaches the Epileptologist
About Topic:
The case presented is that of an infant presenting with acute onset seizures, seen during a neurology on-call week. The patient had focal seizures, status epilepticus, and significant irritability, with signs of hyperreflexia. The significant cause for the patients seizures was not reached for some time, despite intensive investigations. The case highlights challenges in the diagnosis of acute seizures in this case, the investigative journey, management steps, and valuable role of multidisciplinary care.
Learning objectives:
- Importance of comprehensive history taking
- Consideration of causes for seizures
- Use of antiseizure medication in acute seizures
- The importance of a consultative and a multiteam approach in challenging epilepsy cases
