Symposia: Current Concepts In Autism Spectrum Disorder
Motor disturbances in Autism: Current concepts
Biju Hameed
Although ASD is not associated with severe motor disturbances, many studies have reported motor deficits including alterations in motor milestone development, clumsiness, motor incoordination, disturbances in reach-to-grasp movement, deficits in gross and fine motor movement, and impaired postural control. In addition, intrusive and abnormal movements appear in ASD including repetitive hand flapping, stereotypy, and self-injurious behavior. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Coordination Disorder share similar behavioral and motor symptoms, but are not commonly studied together. A diagnosis of ASD must trigger motor screening, evaluations, and appropriate interventions by physical and occupational therapists to address the functional impairments of children with ASD and positively impacting their cognition and behavior.
