In a fascinating new study published in Cell Reports investigators from California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California quantifying intrinsic functional connectivity in six individuals who underwent hemispherectomy, in childhood. Studies of temporal correlations of blood-oxygenation-level-dependent signal (BOLD) as indirect measures of intrinsic functional connectivity with resting-state fMRI have suggested that a relatively small set of resting-state functional brain networks underlie cognition and behaviour. It is with great sadness that I report the passing on Sunday Nov 10 of Dr Ian Hopkins, at age 85 years. Ian was Australia's first paediatric neurologist, commencing work in this role at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne in 1967. Ian established neurology services at the RCH, was the inaugural Director of Neurology between 1977-1987, and continued working as a senior neurologist until 2001. The ICNA congratulates Professor Lieven Lage on being awarded the Aicardi Lecture 2019 for his contributions to child neurology. The biennial Aicardi Award established by the European Paediatric Neurology Society (EPNS) in partnership with MacKeith Press recognises a respected and admired doctor who has attained major achievements in child neurology. Pediatric Epilepsy Training (PET) Brasil delivered a Portuguese PET1 course in Luanda (Angola) on Sept 14th 2019. 6 Brazilian staff with expertise in epilepsy were present and the course was delivered free of charge to 34 attendees split into 5 subgroups of 8 attendees each along with one course director. Among all subscribers, 3 pediatricians from Maputo/Mozambique were registered. ILAE/ICNA provided funding of $5000 which helped bring two of them from Maputo to Luanda.
