Director; Prof and Head, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER)

Dr Vivek Lal (MD, DM-Neurology, FIAN, FRCP (Edin )) is the Director of the prestigious Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, India. He is a Professor of Neurology and is also the and Chief of the Department. He has also served as the Dean of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Punjab, India and is a part of the editorial team of journals -Neuro-ophthalmology( Taylor and Francis), Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology and Indian edition OF European journal of Neurology. He is a fellow of Royal College of Physicians (FRCP- Edin) and Indian academy of Neurology (FIAN).
He has been teaching, training and doing research in PGI for thirty years and his major areas of interest are Headache and Neuro-Ophthalmology. He has the single largest series in world literature on Ophthalmoplegic Migraine and has several national and international publications, chapters in several books and awards to his credit.
His presentations especially ‘The Grand Rounds’ are extremely popular among his students and he has been awarded ‘Master teacher’ award as well.
He has lectured all over the world including different world congresses and have always held the PGI and national flag flying high. He was an invited faculty and co-chaired the session on Neuro-ophthalmology at XXIII- World Congress of Neurology (WCN), Kyoto, Japan in 2017; XXIV- WCN Dubai in 2019 and XXV- WCN in Rome 2021 (Virtual) and XXVI- World Congress of Neurology (WCN),Montreal, Canada. He has been Visiting Guest Faculty to the University of Oxford, UK, in March 2016 and was also a Teaching Faculty at Medical ophthalmology Society (MOS), UK. He was invited Neurologist in Rotary International Medical Mission to Ethiopia, Oct-Nov 2015. During this while he was also the visiting Neuro-ophthalmologist, University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He strongly believes in Holistic medicine and is the Chairperson of Integrative and Yoga Medicine committee, PGIMER. He has contributed his services towards the health of various soldiers and their families admitted with the Indian Armed forces as well.
He has been actively organizing lectures, seminars and campaigns for general public on vital subjects and has been striving towards removal of societal taboos associated with these treatable neurological conditions.
