Prof. Dieter Janz [1920-2016]
Prof. Dieter Janz, Berlin, an iconic figure in the history of epileptology has passed away on December 24, 2016. He was 96 years old. Prof. Janz has made numerous contributions to the field of epileptolgy. In 1957, Janz and Walter Christian described "juvenile myoclonic epilepsy", which was later named after Janz, as a syndrome. Prof. Janz, among other things, drew attention to the teratogenic effects of antiepileptic drugs and was also one of the first to report the loss of activity antibiotics with the simultaneous use of antiepileptic drugs. His epilepsy clinic in Heidelberg became the hub of epileptology in Germany.
Prof Janz was ILAE Vice President from 1973-1981 and received in 1999 the Lifetime Achievement Award of the ILAE and IBE. In 2004 he received the Otfrid Foerster Medal of the German League against Epilepsy and in 2008 the "Scientific Award of Distinction" of the 8th European Congress for Epileptology.

Dieter Janz himself joked when he addressed the guests at his 90th birthday celebrations : "After all that I have heard about myself today, I must say: I am already a great guy" - impressed by himself after all the praise , And especially thanked his wife Gabriele for 62 common years of marriage.
Dieter Janz studied medicine in Marburg, Prague and Freiburg. After a period of assistance at the Heidelberg Clinic, he was appointed to the newly appointed Chair of Neurology at the University of Charlottenburg of the Freie Universität in 1973. Four years previously, Janz had pubished his book "Die Epilepsien". Prof Janz will be deeply missed by all.
