The Utility of Prognostic Models in Pediatric Guillain Barre Syndrome : A Regional Cohort Study-EGE

Background. Two sets of prognostic model referred to as Erasmus GBS outcome score modified EGOS (mEGOS) to predict functional outcome and the Erasmus GBS respiratory insufficiency score (EGRIS) model that predicted the requirement for mechanical ventilation. However, the usefulness of this model remains unclear in other patient cohorts. Objective. To evaluate the utility of Guillan-Barre Syndrome (GBS) prognostic models (mEGOS and EGRIS) in a pediatric cohort from a tertiary center. Methods. A total of 36 children with GBS, had been treated with departmental protocol included in the cohort. The relationship between mEGOS (hospital admission and 7th day of admission) and EGRIS values and the need for an intensive care unit and sequelae neurological findings in the follow-up were evaluated. Results. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 86.8±48.6 (15-192) months for the cohort (F/M=1:2.6) with a preceding events (77.8%). The most common findings on admission were weakness in the lower extremities (88.9%), weakness in the upper extremities (66.7 %), and pain (50%), respectively. As unexpected clinical findings hyperreflexia in 3 patients, normoactive reflex in 5 patients, and nuchal rigidity in 2 patients were determined. Eight (22%) patients required intensive care and 7 (19.4%) patients had neurological deficit at follow-up. There was a significant correlation between mEGOS values and neurological deficit at follow-up (r=0.616). A moderate correlation was found between the EGRIS score and the need for intensive care (r=0.484). Conclusion. We conclude that mEGOS and EGRIS are clinically useful prognostic tools in our pediatric GBS population
