Our cases with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy in which we applied hypothermia

Objectives: Newborn babies who were treated for hypothermia due to asphyxia were analyzed Methods: Fifteen newborn babies (2020 - 2022 )were analyzed retrospectively Results: Mean week of gestation was 38. Nine babies were born vaginally , 6 babies were born by C/S. While 12 patients needed positive pressure ventilation in the delivery room, 7 of them were intubated, 3 patients did not need resuscitation. The mean 5th minute apgar score was 6.2. Nine of the mothers had presentation placental anomaly, two had uterine rupture, two had placental abruption and two had preeclampsia. Average pH:6.9, base deficiency -15.0 and lactate 14.5 in cord blood gas of babies was detected. In the Sarnat staging performed on admission, 8 patients were classified as stage 1, 6 patients as stage 2 and 1 patient as stage 3. The mean time to onset of hypothermia was 2.8 hours. While 14 patients were treated with hypothermia for 72 hours, 1 patient died in the 12th hour of his life. Three of our patients had clinical seizures and levetiracetam treatment was started. EEG disorder was detected in one of these patients. The control EEG was found to be normal and the drug was discontinued. While cranial MRI was performed in 9 of our patients, an increase in signal was detected in the basal ganglia in one of them, and the others were reported as normal. The mean hospital stay was 17.2 days. Conclusion: Hypothermia treatment has an important place in determining the neurological prognosis.
