This study, it was aimed to make an evaluation in the follow-up and treatment of cases with pseudotumor cerebri syndrome (PTC).
Data was collected from 21 centers in Turkey based on retrospective records, patients with pseudotumor cerebri according to Modified Dandy Criteria and followed for at least 3 months between January 2010 and January 2022 were included. Complaints were examined in terms of demographic data, clinical, radiological findings, treatment options, and follow-up.
688 children were diagnosed with PTC, the mean age was 134.1 months at the onset. In a lumbar puncture, the mean opening pressure was 380 mm-H2O. The majority of girls (58.8%) had, 51.6% primary PTC in diagnostic classification. The obesity rate was 36.6%. The most common symptom was headache (78%). 52 cases (%7.7) were asymptomatic. In magnetic resonance imaging %61 was normal, %9.9 globe flattening,% 7.9 optic nerve tortuosity, 6.1% sinus vein stenosis, and 4.2% empty sella. Treatment was applied medically in order acetazolamide (618/688) as the first choice, topiramate (167/688), steroids (49/688), and furosemide (18/688). Surgical treatment applied to 4.3% of patients: Shunt operations 17/30, optic nerve sheath fenestration 11/30. The mean time to remission of symptoms was 53.5 days during a mean15.9 month follow-up period. while the median time to remission for papilledema was 75.5 days. 76.7% of the patients were in remission, and 10.7% of them were reported to be in relapse.
PTC is mostly idiopathic, can recur, and lead to vision loss. Early diagnosis and effective treatment are important to prevent vision loss.
