Dr. Yousef Alrumayyan completed an MBBS and MD (Pediatric Neurology) from King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). He is currently an Epilepsy Fellow at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has a special interest in neuromodulation.
Dr. Sonali Singh trained in India and completed her pediatric Neurology training (DM) at AIIMS, New Delhi (India). She worked as a consultant for two years, and currently, she is pursuing a fellowship in Epilepsy Fellow at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is currently studying the outcome of VNS in children with monogenic DRE.
Dr. Puneet Jain is a Staff Neurologist at SickKids and Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto. His clinical interest includes Medical management of children with drug-refractory epilepsy, Epilepsy Surgery evaluations, Cortical motor mapping, VNS, EE-SWAS, and Infantile spasms. His research interests mirror his clinical work. He has authored more than 100 papers in multiple peer-reviewed medical journals.
Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is a commonly used palliative treatment strategy in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who are not candidates for potentially curative resective epilepsy surgery. Its effectiveness has been variably reported in the literature and is usually well tolerated. In cases of partial responses, it may be combined with other palliative procedures like corpus callosotomy or other neuromodulation strategies.
