mineralising angiopathy presenting as stroke

Nine month old child with normal perinatal and developmental history, presented to us with decreased usage of right upper limb and lower limb followed by a trivial trauma. There was no history of varicella infection or immunisation in recent past. On examination there was right sided UMN facial palsy with right hemiplegia. MRI revealed infarct while MRA was normal. Workup for other causes of stroke including ECHO, haemoglobin HPLC were normal. CT of the brain revealed mineralisation in leticulostriate region bilaterally. Child was started on Aspirin and after 6 months of followup he remained well with no reoccurrence. Child was gaining milestones and there was improvement in limb functioning. Mineralising angiopathy is an important cause for stroke in children after trivial trauma. It should be considered as important etiology while working up for basal ganglion stroke. The knowledge of this entity prevents unnecessary extensive workup in these children. Reoccurrence are also seen in this disease entity.
