Three years follow up of 6-minute walk test and North Star Ambulatory Assessment in 30 ambulant boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy since the beginning of steroid treatment
Objective: Follow up of outcome in 30 DMD boys after initiating the steroid treatment Methods: 6-minute walk test, North Star Ambulatory Assessment were performed by ambulant DMD boys at baseline and 1, 2 and 3 years after initiating steroid treatment. Statistical analysis was made at the first second and third year of the follow up. Results: Mean distance passed on 6MWT at baseline was 352,83 meters, 359,07 at first year, 354,3 meters at second and 325,77 meters at the third year of the follow up. The analysis of repeated measures ANOVA with Greenhouse-Geissler correction, for p<0.05 showed 33,3m (95% CI, 55,2-11,4) (p=0,0001) significant lowering of passed distance for 6MWT at the third year comparing to the first year and 28,5m (95%CI, 38,9-18,2m) (p=0,0001) in the third year comparing the second year of follow up. NSAA at the baseline was 27,07 (+-5,15) points, 26,73 (+- 5,11) points after first year, 25,37 (+- 5,3) points after second year and 23,37(+- 5,18) points after third year of follow up. The three year decline was statistically significant p<0,05 (mean difference test: p=0,0074). Conclusion: Our longitudinal follow up data using the 6-minute walk test and North Star Ambulatory Assessment in Duchenne muscular dystrophy ambulant boys presented the progression of the disease concerning initial functional findings comparing with the results of the yearly follow up.
