Speaker Dr. Martín Hyland graduated from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina. He finished his Pediatrics Residency at Hospital Británico de Buenos Aires/ Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA) and Pediatric Neurology Residency at Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires (HIBA)/ Instituto Universitario del Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires (IUHIBA). He also completed his role of Chief Resident and Fellowship in Child Neuromuscular Diseases and Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring at HIBA, where he currently works as an associate physician in the Pediatric Neurology Service. He is also a faculty member at UBA, IUHIBA, and CEMIC, a member of Cochrane International, and currently finishing his Masters in Education for Health Professions.
Expert Faculty Dr. María Vaccarezza graduated from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina. She finished her Pediatrics residency at Hospital J.A Fernandez and Pediatric Neurology Residency at Hospital de Niños Ricardo Gutierrez (HNRG). She is currently Sub-Director of the Pediatric Neurology Service at Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires (HIBA), where she also serves as Head of the Ketogenic Therapy Section. She is an associate professor at Instituto Universitario del Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires (IUHIBA) and has authored and collaborated on numerous publications, guidelines, and book chapters concerning primarily Ketogenic Therapies.
Moderator Dr. Juhi Gupta is an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Neurology at the Department of Pediatrics, J K Lon Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan. She has completed her MBBS, MD Pediatrics, and DM (Pediatric Neurology). She has participated in over 25 publications in national and international indexed journals. She was a Sub-investigator in an International Multi-centric clinical trial on Rett's Syndrome conducted across five countries. Her areas of interest are Pediatric Epilepsy, Stroke, Neuro-immunology, Neuro-muscular Disorders, and Headache. Currently, she is a chair of the Future Leaders of the International Child Neurology Association (FLICNA). She was awarded the Dr. P N Taneja award by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics in 2020 for her paper on transcranial magnetic stimulation.
Super-Refractory Status Epilepticus is a devastating condition with potentially catastrophic consequences, being characteristically challenging to treat. During this Journal Club, using the primer of a real-life case study, a review of current guidelines for treating this entity will be discussed, focusing on the role of Ketogenic Therapies.
By attending the session, you will be able to learn the following points:
- To review the literature on the management of NORSE/FIRES, entities that frequently present as Super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE), with a specific focus on international guidelines.
- To understand the role of the Ketogenic Diet (KD) as a proven, safe, and effective treatment alternative for SRSE.
- To overview KD's proposed mechanisms of action, characteristics in each phase of SRSE as well as possible complications and considerations.
