Speaker Dr. Gunce Basarir graduated from the Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul, Turkey. He has completed a Pediatrics Residency at the University of Health Sciences, Zeynep Kamil Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. Currently, he is working as a final year Fellow Physician in the Pediatric Neurology Department at Izmir Katip Celebi University Tepecik Training and Research Hospital, Turkey.

Speaker Dr. Ozlem Ersoy graduated from the Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul, Turkey. She completed her Pediatrics Residency at Haseki Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul and worked as a Pediatrician for almost five years. Then she started a Pediatric Neurology Fellowship at the Mersin University Faculty of Medicine in Mersin. Currently, she is working in Mersin City Hospital as a Pediatric Neurology Consultant.

Expert Faculty Prof. Haluk Topaloğlu graduated from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey, in 1978 and completed his specialty in Pediatrics at the same Institute in 1982. Between 1984 and 1985, he trained in Child Neurology at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, University of Calgary, Canada. He completed a Fellowship as the Christian Saunders Memorial Fellow at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School in London, UK, in 1994-1995. He is a British Council and ’Association Française contre les Myopathies (AFM) scholar. Dr. Topaloglu has received several National and International awards, including the Turkish Scientific and Research Council (TUBİTAK) award in 2003 and the Italian Gaetano Conte Prize in 2015 for his lifetime contributions to clinical and basic research in Muscle Diseases. He is a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA). He served as the Secretary of the World Muscle Society (WMS) from 2001-2019. He was on the Executive Boards of the International Child Neurology Society (ICNA), Infantile Seizure Society (ISS), Asian and Oceanian Child Neurology Association (AOCNA), Mediterranean Society of Myology (MSM) and is currently Co-chair of the ICNA Neurology through Art and Time (NTAT) Humanities Committee. He has aided in the development of novel therapies for Pediatric Neuromuscular Disorders. He is on the editorial boards of Neuropediatrics, Journal of Neuromuscular Diseases, Annals of Child Neurology Society, and is currently Associate Editor of the Neuromuscular Disorders journal. Professor Topaloglu’s h-index is over 65. He is currently a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics and Child Neurology at Yeditepe University in İstanbul.

Moderator Dr. N. Varsha Monica Reddy graduated from the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, KLE University, in Karnataka, India. She completed her Pediatrics residency at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Karnataka, India. She completed Pediatric Neurology Fellowship in 2022 from Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health in Bangalore, India. At present, she is working as a Consultant Pediatric Neurologist at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, India.

 

Mitochondrial Disease presenting in childhood is characterized by clinical, biochemical, and genetic complexity. Recognition of classical syndromes, diagnostic approaches, investigations, and management with emerging therapies is essential. We intend to discuss two interesting cases of Mitochondrial Disorders and share the current therapies & expert opinion by renowned Dr. Haluk Topaluglu.
