IBRO-UCT African Advanced School on Neuroimmunology and the Gut-Brain Axis (December 2 - 17, 2018, University of Cape Town, South Africa) Organizer: Dr. Vinogran Naidoo (University of Cape Town). Aims and Scope of the School This IBRO Advanced School on neuroimmunology will focus on the gut-brain axis and neuroinflammation, rapidly expanding areas of research shown to be important in brain function and behavior. Description The goals of the School are to: 1) Further understanding of the role of gut microbiota in cognitive function and behavior 2) Critically discuss how the immune system interfaces with the gut-brain axis by examining pre-clinical and clinical evidence that show microbiota-related effects on CNS function 3) Provide students with a deeper understanding of the translational relevance of a dysfunctional gut-brain axis in the context of neuroinflammation for the treatment of mental health disorders 4) Interrogate the paradigm shift that immune system support is required for optimal neuronal survival following CNS injury, and that peripherally-circulating T-lymphocytes mediate regulation of cognitive function. 5) Train students to use a range of experimental paradigms to study gut-brain interactions in humans and rodents. These will include molecular tools, electrophysiology, immunophenotyping, brain imaging, bacterial community profiling and behavioral tests Who should apply to this School? Applications are open to PhD & MD students, postdoctoral fellows & junior faculty engaged in clinical and/or basic research pertaining to neuroimmunology and are currently residing in Africa. Applicants will be selected on the basis of their CVs. Costs covered for selected applicants Accommodation and meals are provided. Assistance with travel expenses to South Africa are available if required and adequately motivated. Application deadline: August 5th, 2018 For all questions, please contact Dr. Vinogran Naidoo at [email protected] More
