Follow-up of seizure free patients after ketogenic diet therapy

Objective:To retrospectively analyze the outcome of ketogenic diet therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy. Methods: From December, 2014 to May 2020, patients with seizure free effect for one year after ketogenic diet therapy were followed up for two years, excluding patients major epileptic syndromes like West syndrome, Ohtahara syndrome, Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, ect. Results: 225 patients with epilepsy without epileptic syndrome were seizure free after ketogenic diet treatment, 123 males and 102 females. Mean age 12.48 months, sd 11.55 months, range 0-57 months. Anit-seizure medications: a total of 658 prescriptions of anti-seizure medications, with an average of 2.92 prescriptions per person. These included sodium valproate, topiramate, nitrazepam, levetiracetam, lamotrigine, oxazepine. After 1.5 years of follow-up, 202 cases (90%) were still seizure free. After 2 years, 178 cases (79.1%) remained seizure free. Conclusion: Ketogenic diet therapy combined with antiepileptic drugs, for non-syndromic epilepsy, 79.1 percent epileptic patients remained seizure free after 2 years.
